💙

Connor, autism and ADHD

Connor is autistic and has ADHD. He experiences attention, movement, emotions, sensory information and everyday situations in his own way.

Connor can be easily distracted, find sitting still difficult and sometimes act before he has time to process what is happening. Loud noise, busy environments, confusing situations and unexpected change can become overwhelming.

Routine and predictability help him feel secure. Clear one-step instructions, visual reminders, preparation before changes, calm reassurance and regular movement breaks help Connor understand what is expected without taking away his personality or independence.

Autism and ADHD explain some of Connor’s needs, but they are not the whole of him. He is funny, affectionate, caring, energetic, curious and determined, with his own interests, routines and brilliant way of seeing the world.

🧬

Understanding CACNA1A

Connor has a confirmed rare CACNA1A genetic variant, which gave the family an important explanation for parts of his neurological and developmental journey.

CACNA1A is a gene involved in the way messages travel through parts of the brain and nervous system. Connor’s variant sits alongside his epilepsy, developmental delay, speech and communication needs, coordination and balance difficulties, attention differences and wider neurodevelopmental profile.

Getting this answer took years of appointments, referrals, hospital visits, investigations, specialist assessments and long periods of waiting. The result did not make the seizures, appointments or uncertainty disappear, but it finally connected difficulties that had previously been looked at separately.

Testing also showed that Connor’s dad carries the same variant. That brought difficult feelings and questions, but also helped the family understand physical symptoms and experiences across generations. A genetic result gives context—it is not about blame.

CACNA1A can affect people differently, so Connor’s support is based on his own needs rather than assuming everybody with the variant has the same experience.

Living with epilepsy

Connor’s seizures began during infancy. Epilepsy remains an important part of his medical history and the way his family plans daily life.

The early seizures began a long journey through hospital appointments, investigations and specialist care. At one stage an EEG was reported as normal, but that did not cancel the seizures the family had witnessed or remove the need for continued assessment.

Epilepsy brings uncertainty. Plans sometimes have to change, adults remain alert to signs that Connor may be unwell, and activities need appropriate safety awareness.

The aim is not to let epilepsy define or unnecessarily restrict him. With communication between family, school and medical professionals, Connor is supported to enjoy learning, sport, parties, trips and everyday adventures as safely and confidently as possible.

🗣️

Speech and communication

Connor has expressive speech and communication difficulties. He shares things best when people slow down, listen and adapt their language.

Connor’s speech developed differently and expressing a full thought can take extra time. He may know what he wants to say but find it difficult to organise the words, explain an event or answer a broad question.

Short sentences, one instruction at a time, visual prompts, colourful semantics, modelling and extra processing time help. Patient adults can check understanding without repeatedly pressuring him to answer.

Communication is not limited to speech. Facial expression, behaviour, movement, humour, interests and familiar routines can all communicate something important. His confidence in asking for help and sharing his needs continues to grow.

📘

Learning at his own pace

Connor works significantly below age-related expectations and needs adapted teaching, repetition, structure and adult guidance.

His learning profile is uneven. Phonics, reading, writing and handwriting need carefully broken-down teaching, repeated practice and practical support. Maths can be a relative strength when it is visual, concrete and meaningful.

Connor’s EHCP helps describe the provision he needs. Small groups, clear routines, visual information, practical tasks and familiar adults make learning more accessible. He has made progress with transitions, focus, communication and asking for help.

Practical science feeds his curiosity, while PE is a major strength. Football, tag rugby, athletics and swimming help develop coordination, stamina, teamwork and confidence. Progress is measured against Connor’s own starting point—not by comparing him with somebody else.

🧠

Regulation, anxiety and routines

Busy or unpredictable situations can overwhelm Connor. Calm structure and preparation help him regulate and feel safe.

Connor can process information more slowly when he is anxious, overstimulated or unsure what is happening. Strong routines and repetitive or OCD-type traits have also formed part of the wider picture described by his family and professionals.

Behaviour is treated as communication rather than simply being labelled difficult. A refusal, repeated question, burst of movement or emotional reaction may show that something is unclear, a transition feels unsafe, the environment is too busy or he needs time to regulate.

Visual timetables, advance warnings, limited choices, calm reassurance, movement or brain breaks and space to recover without shame all help. Consistency between home and school gives him the best chance to succeed.

🌙

Sleep difficulties

Sleep has been a continuing challenge and forms part of Connor’s wider neurological and developmental needs.

Settling to sleep and maintaining a reliable night-time routine can be difficult. Poor sleep can affect attention, emotional regulation, learning and the energy available for the next day.

Connor uses prescribed melatonin as part of his sleep support. The family combines medical guidance with a predictable evening routine and continues to review his needs with professionals.

Sleep difficulties affect the whole household, but they are approached with patience: understanding the need, adjusting support and recognising that difficult nights are not a failure.

🧩

The journey to answers

Connor’s needs overlap across several areas, so understanding the complete picture required many professionals and a great deal of persistence.

His journey has involved paediatricians, neurologists, therapists, genetic services, education staff and other specialists. Appointments often focused on one part—seizures, development, speech, attention, sleep, learning or movement—while the family lived with all of them together.

Referrals, assessments and long waits could be exhausting. The CACNA1A result connected parts of the story, while autism and ADHD assessments helped describe the support Connor needs day to day.

There are still appointments, questions and uncertain moments. The family shares his story to celebrate Connor honestly and help other families with complex needs feel less alone.
